The Rev. Dr. Walter L. Michel, 84

Walter L. Michel of Vienna, Austria and Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2016, in Evanston, Illinois. Born on May 19, 1932, in Adolfsdorf, frmr. Yugoslavia, to Felix and Elisabeth (Müller) Michel, Walter was a passionate Professor of the Old Testament at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. His lectures, sermons, adult forums, and presence impacted many, deeply.

Walter is survived by his grandchildren Lukas, Aleks, and Laila Cheris, and Emilija Michel; his daughter and her husband, Selga and Adam Cheris of Glencoe, Illinois; his son, Dainis W. Michel of Chicago, Illinois and Vienna, Austria; his brother, Werner Michel, of Vienna, Austria; and Gundega R. Michel, of Riga, Latvia.

Honoring Walter’s wishes, no funeral was held.

He left us with the following message:

“I wish you a great, fantastic life … get as much out of life, love … as you can … it is gone in a moment …”
